The Process Control and Automation group of the Aalto University, School of Chemical Engineering is growing. With this call we are searching for up to twohighly motivated
who want to join us in advancing our research at the intersection between statistical machine learning and automatic control. Our team is a vibrant research group bringing together expertise in chemical engineering, control theory and applied mathematics. We are proud to be an innovative group with a focus on state-of-the-art investigations and with a world-class infrastructure for research.
We are offering two fully-funded doctoral candidate positions in the field of probabilistic modelling and stochastic control of chemical and biochemical systems. We explore how data and domain knowledge can be integrated in system level analyses that combine mechanistic modelling, machine learning, control theory, and optimisation. Our main projects regard the dynamics and control of biological and environmental systems where phenomenological representations, model and measurement uncertainty, and probabilistic modelling and programming are combined. We are especially interested in sample-efficient statistical machine learning and deep learning for dynamics and control.
Your experience and ambitions
As a successful candidate you are expected to have an excellent study record in any of the disciplines related to our research, up to the MSc level. If your MSc research is already in the field of system dynamics and control, you can finalise it in our group and then continue with the doctoral studies. Prior experience in at least one of the fields of probability and statistics, control theory, optimisation and numerical analysis is necessary. A consolidated programming experience is also necessary. Moreover, we encourage applications from theorists with an interest in combining formal analysis with numerical simulations.
What we offer
The starting salary of a PhD student is 2450 Eur/month (before taxes), and it increases as you advance in your research and studies. The contract is initially made for one year, with possibility of extension after a successful review of the progress. The total duration of doctoral studies is four years.
