Start your mission with DLR

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is the national aeronautics and space research centre and the space agency of the Federal Republic of Germany. Here, 10,000 employees work together on a unique variety of topics in the fields of aeronautics, space, energy, transport, security and digitalisation. Their missions range from basic research to the development of innovative applications and products for tomorrow. Cutting-edge research requires excellent minds – particularly more females – at all levels, who fully achieve their potential in an inspiring environment. Launch your mission with us.

For our Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics in Ulm, we are currently looking for

Physicists, Engineers, Mathematicians (f/m/x) Modelling and Simulation of all-solid-state batteries

Your mission:

The Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) does research in the field of efficient energy storage systems and next generation energy conversion technologies. The department of Computational Electrochemistry at the Helmholtz-Institute Ulm for Electrochemical Energy Storage (HIU) develops new models and simulation tools for the investigation of battery materials and cells. As part of the excellent battery research in Ulm our work is situated between basic and applied research. In an interdisciplinary team, we investigate the physical-chemical processes in batteries from the nanoscale to the macroscale.

We are looking for dedicated Post-Docs for the modelling and simulation of all-solid-state batteries within the national competence cluster FestBatt. All-solid-state batteries potentially provide significant improvements in energy density and battery safety. However, challenges are e.g. a lower power density and lifetime compared to state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries. Both properties are significantly influenced by the design and microstructure of the electrodes and cells. Therefore, we develop physico-chemical models of all-solid-state batteries which explicitly resolve the microstructure of the electrodes and degradation processes at the interface to the electrolyte. The models serve as a basis for the optimization of the next-generation of all-solid-state batteries.

As a member of an internationally leading research team in the field of microstructure-resolved simulation of batteries, you will make an important contribution to the understanding and optimization of this key technology. We offer you an attractive research environment, room for your own ideas and international visibility. In return, we expect you to have an excellent degree – preferably in one of the above-mentioned disciplines – as well as an interest in using innovative methods of scientific computing. Furthermore, you should enjoy working creatively and independently in an international team.

Your tasks:

  • Conception of new mathematical models for solid-state batteries
  • Development of new numerical methods and solution strategies
  • Extension of the scientific knowledge
  • Targeted application of the results of basic research to practical tasks for the industry
  • Publication and presentation of scientific results in scientific journals and at national/international conferences

Your qualifications:

  • Excellent analytical skills demonstrated by a master’s degree in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, or similar disciplines
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Independent and result-oriented work methods
  • Doctorate in Natural Sciences or Engineering is of advantage
  • Many years of professional experience in the area of electrochemistry, batteries, fuel cells, modelling and simulation desirable
  • Strong interest in theory, modelling, and simulation of physical processes
  • Good programming skills in C/C++ or Matlab
  • Passion for innovative research
  • Proficient English language skills

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
