  • At least 60% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation concerning de development and in vitro/in vivo evaluation of new mRNA vaccine platforms and mRNA-based drugs.
  • You will assist in the teaching activities at the department with an emphasis on the teaching support within the course Bio-organic Chemistry, which is given in Dutch. In more detail you will assist with the updating of the didactic material, the online course website, the practical exercises, the feedback and the exams.
  • You supervise master students in the context of their master thesis.
  • You will assist in the internal and external services of the department.


  • You hold a degree of Master in Biotechnology, Bioscience Engineering (Cell and Gene Biotechnology), Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Veterinary Medicine or an equivalent diploma. The degree requirements need to be fulfilled at the start of your appointment. Consequently, final year students can also apply. For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted.
  • You are interested in academic and/or project-based research and services in the field of mRNA vaccines and mRNA-based drugs for veterinary and/or human applications.
  • You have an excellent knowledge of the Dutch language, which is needed for the teaching supervision activities, and you have a good knowledge of English.
  • You have excellent study results, preferably you belong to the top 20% of your year.
  • You preferably have practical experience with molecular biotechnological procedures, for example gained during your master thesis.
  • You are prepared to take course laboratory animal science and to obtain a laboratory animal science certificate, or you already have such a certificate (please enclose a copy of the certificate with the application).
  • If necessary, you are prepared to take additional courses/training in, for example, (molecular) biotechnology and/or gene technology.
  • You have excellent teaching and communication skills.


  • We offer you a two-year appointment, which may be renewed twice for two years, on condition that the previous term was given a positive evaluation. Attention: If you have been previously appointed as a junior assistant or doctoral fellow at a university within the Flemish Community, this appointment will be deducted from the maximum term of appointment, which is six years at the most according to the Codex of Higher Education.
  • Your appointment will start on 1 October 2022 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined according to salary scale AAP3. More information about our salary scales.
