Develop and optimize microbatteries, harvestore devices and test structures
What you will do
Microbatteries are extra-small-footprint batteries integrated in an electronic microsystem to provide it with power. The application area stretches from a wireless sensor for the internet of things, over a smart pill for smart drug delivery to an embedded chip on a smart card. To extend the scope of these microbatteries they can be coupled to an on-board energy-harvester, such as an infrared photovoltaic cell, to be able to recharge the battery when idle. Of course, this harvester also takes up space and for true autonomous microsystems (i.e. no external connections possible) management of available space is critical. In the electrochemical storage team at imec and together with a consortium of research partners (https://harvestore.eu), we are enabling the route to combine storage and harvesting in a single device to optimize space and thus energy of the microsystem. Together with you we want to explore these “harvestore” devices including thermogalvanic devices, where temperature differences are electrochemically exploited to gain energy.
Moreover, microbatteries present controlled test structures to characterize the interactions between battery materials: the material interfaces are more limited, more clearly defined and controllably modifiable, in comparison to powder-based batteries. At imec we aim at characterizing these interfaces to serve as input for the modelling of powder-based batteries, where imec focusses on the characterization task and one of our partners on the modelling task (https://www.sim-flanders.be/project/lifesbat). For this work you can start from imec’s knowledge on thin film batteries and 3D structured Si substrates.
The work will involve design of devices, deposition and micropatterning of thin-film stacks and testing of the devices. Your main activities will take place in the imec labs in Leuven where the state-of-the-art nanofabrication facilities of imec and a fully equipped battery lab are at your disposal.
