Duties

As senior lecturer in history, you are expected to plan and teach courses at undergraduate and master’s level, requiring broad knowledge of history. Teaching includes planning and implementation, supervision, assessment, course development and evaluation. In addition, duties also include collaboration, development work and administrative tasks. Duties at doctoral level may be required. Time allotted for continuing professional development typically accounts for 20% of the working hours, used for research or other professional development.

Emphasis is on teaching and supervision in history within the teacher education programmes, both on campus and via distance learning. Teaching is normally conducted in Swedish, and occasionally in English. Development and planning are carried out in close collaboration with other teachers in the subject and you are expected to work primarily on campus in order to actively participate in the development work within teaching, research and collaboration at subject, department, and faculty level.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position of Senior Lecturer in History, applicants are required to have demonstrated teaching expertise. Applicants are also required to hold a Degree of Doctor in History or equivalent academic expertise, or equivalent professional qualifications deemed relevant to the nature of the position and the duties included therein. The position also requires a good command of Swedish, Norwegian or Danish, as well as the ability to teach in Swedish and English.

Pursuant to the Karlstad University appointments procedure, teachers must possess the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved, meaning that you have the ability to collaborate and interact with colleagues and students in a respectful manner, take responsibility for the activities within the subject and your own duties, and contribute to a good working environment, as well as having completed training in higher education pedagogy. Candidates who have not completed courses in higher education pedagogy may still be hired, provided that they use the time allotted to continual professional development to complete the required courses within two years of employment, or that they apply for validation of prior learning. For other eligibility requirements, refer to Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure https://www.kau.se/files/2023-12/Appointments procedure_eng_20220928.pdf
