Doctoral student in biomolecular fluorescence spectroscopy/imaging

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as in architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Arbetsuppgifter

The research performed at the group of Experimental Biomolecular Physics is directed towards the interdisciplinary field between physics, biology and medicine. The activities are primarily focussed on ultrasensitive and ultrahigh resolution fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging, where the possibility to detect, identify and characterize biomolecules and biomolecular interactions down to a single molecule level opens exciting perspectives in diagnostics, screening methodologies, and for fundamental dynamic and conformational studies of biomolecules (see also www.biomolphysics.kth.se).

We now look for a highly motivated doctoral student, to be engaged in an ongoing project. The aim of the project is to develop fluorescence-based super-resolution microscopy, so-called stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy for cellular characterization as well as for microbiology and cancer diagnostics. In the project, STED will also be combined with fluorescence fluctuation analyses (fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, FCS) for characterization of molecular dynamics in cellular membranes, at the scale of tens of nanometers. This project is inter-disciplinary, it covers both experimental work and modelling/calculations, and is carried out in cooperation with biomedical research groups at Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University. The PhD position will be located at Albanova University Center in Stockholm, and in a newly formed cluster of research groups within optical quantum sensing.

The employment is four years, with a possibility of maximum up to five years if 20 percent of department duties and/or teaching time are included in the employment.

Qualifications

A suitable background for this position would be a Master of Science in Engineering Physics, or other similar educations, with a specialization in biomedical physics, optics, photonics or laser physics. In addition to the traditional academic merits, programming skills, a relevant degree project, and practical experience from fluorescence spectroscopy/imaging are regarded as advantageous qualifications. So are international experience, teaching experience, as well as English and Swedish language skills.

Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, and have a strong interest in physics and its applications within the biomedical field. They should possess the ability to work independently, to grasp new questions addressed and to perform critical analyses. For the PhD position it is also important to have good cooperative and communicative skills, also with researchers outside of the own area of research.
