Third-cycle subject: engineering materials science
Proper slag control according to metallurgical requirements is an important issue for producing demanding metals. Current practice relies on sampling, sample analysis and testing of the semi-finished product. This procedure is time consuming and not in agreement with the rapid development of the future digitalized metallurgical industry. Even for experienced operators, the human vision can hardly distinguish between liquid steel and slag of same temperature. Towards intelligent metallurgy, a smart device system using a custom-made camera system with integrated industrialized software will be developed and tested to provide operators the availability to visually monitor and quantify their metallurgical processes in real time. Where the developed system will allow metal producing companies to have real time quality control of the metal before casting and during several other steelmaking processes, where the gained data and information can be used as base for future developments.
You will be required to work in close collaboration with industry. The project will require a significant amount of experimental work in laboratory and industry. Where the gained experimental knowledge will provide the foundation for the real time application. Programming (e.g. Android application) will be necessary for setting up the practical experiments. Basic knowledge of Java or Pyhton is thus beneficial. Critical assessment of scientific literature and the data collected during the project will be vital. Creativity and analytical problem solving skills are essential.
The position is for two years and leads to a Licentiate degree.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be placed at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and supervised by a docent.

We are looking for a candidate with M.Sc. degree in Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy or Physics.

Doctoral students may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
