The Ameloot group is part of the KU Leuven ​Centre for Membrane Separations, Adsorption, Catalysis, and Spectroscopy (cMACS), which counts 6 PIs and >100 members. The study of porous materials, membranes, films and their interfaces forms the core of the research at cMACS. In this context, we study different flavors of porous and hybrid matter. Our research is focused on enabling applications based on these materials through a fundamental understanding of their formation processes and properties.

Responsibilities

We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral research fellow to combine the following topics:
 

(i) Synthesis of metal-organic framework materials, both as powders and thin films. This part of the work will comprise both conventional solvothermal syntheses and the development of novel methodologies to deposit thin films of MOFs for various applications (e.g., gas separation membranes, sensor coatings). The thin film work will extend the scope of our 'MOF-CVD' approach (see for instance https://www.nature.com/articles/nmat4509) through novel concepts. 

(ii) Adsorption studies on MOF powders and films. This part of the work will focus on several in situ techniques available in the team (FTIR, XRD, ellipsometry, quartz crystal microbalance, NMR, etc. See for instance https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/jacs.1c03716). In addition to targeting fundamental insights into adsorbent-adsorbate interactions and selective adsorption, the measurements will cover conditions directly relevant to sensor applications and industrial separations. 

In this postdoctoral project, you will be working together with scientists and engineers with complementary expertise  in materials synthesis, gas adsorption, the characterization of porous and crystalline materials, etc. For more information on the research group coordinating this project, please refer to http://amelootgroup.org/  and https://twitter.com/AmelootGroup.

Profile

We are looking for:
 

  •     A motivated candidate with a strong academic track record and a PhD in Materials Chemistry or a related field in Science and Engineering. 
  •     A candidate passionate about novel materials, chemistry, and technology, and willing to work as part of an interdisciplinary team. 
  •     An experienced researcher willing to guide younger colleagues starting out in the field.
  •     Previous demonstrations of out-of-the-box thinking. Bonus points if you consider yourself a 'maker' and practical problem solver, we appreciate what you are doing!
  •     Since we target real-world applications through our research, an interest in valorization (e.g., spin-off creation) is a plus.
  •     Since we are a highly international team, proficiency in both written and spoken English is non-negotiable.


Please consider applying if you have several of the following skills:
 

  •     Required: Expertise in the synthesis and characterization of metal-organic frameworks or other microporous materials (e.g., zeolites).
  •     Required: Expertise in adsorption measurements for microporous adsorbents.
  •     Experience with in situ spectroscopy or diffraction or sensor measurements (controlled environment and temperature) is a plus.
  •     Experience in thin film deposition and characterization is a plus.
  •     Experience with / interest in diffusion phenomena is a plus.
  •     Other skills that you think are relevant (please explain in your cover letter).
Offer

A 1 year postdoctoral position with possible extension with 1 or 2 more years.
