At the Group Science and Technology, Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture of the KU Leuven, there is a full-time academic vacancy (ZAP assistant professor) in the field of “architecture design and visual literacy” in the section Architecture & Design on the Sint-Lucas Brussels and Ghent campus. The structure of KU Leuven combines faculties and research-departments in a multi-campus model. The Faculty of Architecture consists of the academic architecture programmes (interior architecture, architecture, spatial design and urban planning and educational master) on the Sint-Lucas Brussels and Ghent campus. The faculty is responsible for organizing educational activities. The Faculty is driven by a consciously assembled diversity of practices and is renowned for its future-oriented education that cultivates a freedom of exploration. There are currently 2400 students, of which ca. 300 are international students. www.arch.kuleuven.be The Department of Architecture is a research department which groups research in the fields of architecture, interior architecture, spatial design and urban planning and educational master, of researchers on the Faculty of Architecture (Sint-Lucas Brussels and Ghent campus) as well as of the Faculty Engineering Sciences (Leuven). The Department is an international center for expertise in these domains and their research is being led by numerous professors and research groups with over one hundred international doctoral students. www.architectuur.kuleuven.be Both the education and the research are performed across the campuses by a staff of around 300 people.
Your research contributes to the development of the authenticity and the further strengthening and anchoring of the design-driven, artistic and practice-based research at the Department of Architecture and is based on the development of critical academic innovative learning environments for designing. You contribute to the development of ADRO’s (Artistic and Design-related Research Output).
Your research contributes to knowledge production and expertise through social service or applied-oriented studies, assignments, research projects, spin-offs, etc. and/or through projects focused on fundamental research.
You explicitly associate your KU Leuven internal productions with the Department of Architecture. External productions of your own practice that you wish to valorise as research output are also explicitly associated with the Department of Architecture, such as prizes, nominations, special realisations and research work in the category ADRO’s (Artistic and Design-related Research Output).
You are involved in, facilitate and promote doctorates with a design approach, as a supervisor or as a member of the supervisory committee.
You essentially provide education within the learning environment Lab-O (Bachelor), (https://onderwijsaanbod.kuleuven.be//opleidingen/n/SC_51523035.htm#bl=03) with a clear commitment to the quality of the educational programme as a whole. In Lab-O (Design Laboratory), the basis for designing is laid. It is a learning environment that splits up into three learning sequences: Media, Expression and Positioning. Lab-O is part of the Bachelor curriculum and is taught in Dutch.
You may also teach in Design Studios. You have experience with the studio teaching format as a learning environment. You approach education as a designer for both learning content and learning environment and show yourself to be a future-oriented pedagogue.
You will contribute to the updating and renewal of architectural education with a special interest in project- and practice-based education where, due to a strongly changed educational context, we are faced with the challenge of revising/rethinking the studio as an educational format in a context of greater (cultural) diversity and increasing student numbers.
Your didactic responsibilities include running of educational activities in a design-oriented laboratory, as well as providing lectures and seminars. You co-manage the studio teams of assistants and/or visiting professors.
You are committed to playing a role in academic management and the further consolidation of design as the core (Key Performance Indicator) of the programmes within the Faculty of Architecture.
In addition, you play an active role in the image and profiling of the Department/Faculty with regard to current and new students and the broad field of architecture (including the cultural sector). This can be done through participation in public performances, information days, introductory moments, etc.
You maintain a close relationship with your field of work.
We are looking for a candidate with a proven expertise, understanding and skill in the field of augmented and virtual realities, computational design, and digital fabrication. The candidate considers these advanced digital techniques as future-oriented design media and uses them inventively (preferably non-conformist) to develop socially critical design in a visual-spatial way. Through design projects, he/she demonstrates his/her understanding of the complexity involved in the global spread of digital technology and its impact on societal developments.
The successful candidate will explore how emerging digital technologies can contribute to an innovation-oriented design literacy that has a critical impact on the practice and pedagogy of architecture. Combining learning and design environments ranging from digital technologies in a laboratory setting to design embedded in real-life situations is a plus.
The research and education that the candidate develops is explicitly design-driven and makes concrete (inter- and/or transdisciplinary) connections with both artistic and technological contexts.
This vacancy reinforces the research line "Design Literacy & Design Pedagogy" of the Department of Architecture. The research is linked to design education and educational innovation. A characteristic of the architecture discipline is that education not only teaches knowledge generated elsewhere but that discipline-specific knowledge is generated in and through education itself (research and education almost coincide in this respect). This has to do with implicit forms of knowledge that are inherent to designing and creating and which pose special challenges to the learning environment and the formulation of assignments.
You hold a master's degree in (interior)architecture or in another filed with demonstrated familiarity in the field of architecture, and a design-driven PhD. Your CV/portfolio shows an active link with digital productions with artistic qualities and demonstrates this in particular by means of realised ADRO’s (Artistic and Design-related Research Output). We appreciate examples of design learning environments that focus on strengthening design literacy.
The teaching assignment is mainly situated within the LAB-O curriculum (Bachelors of Architecture and Interior Architecture), where teaching is done in Durch. Mastery of Dutch as a language of instruction at ERK level C1 is strongly recommended. However, if you do not know Dutch or if your knowledge is insufficient at the time of recruitment, KU Leuven will provide a training offer.
A good command of English is required. KU Leuven offers courses in academic English.
We are offering fulltime employment (100%) in a vibrant and intellectually stimulating design environment.
