The employee will be part of the Welding Engineering Group under the Faculty of engineering technology at KU Leuven. The Welding and Additive manufacturing research at KU Leuven has seen tremendous growth over the past decade. The Welding Engineering Group at KU Leuven focuses on welding based additive manufacturing (AM), material aspects of additive production techniques and welding processes, sustainable manufacturing, sheet metal joining, projection welding, process monitoring. The industrial relevance of the department's research activities is witnessed by its active collaboration with industrial partners (>100 company research reports). The group has been involved in numerous European, national, and bilateral projects, and are also engaged in several scientific organizations and commissions (BIL, IIW Resistance Welding group, etc.). There is active international collaboration of the group with partners in Japan, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and passive collaboration with partners in Norway, Denmark, UK and USA.

Responsibilities

Project

The Ad-Proc-Add II (Advanced Processing of Additively Manufactured Parts II) under the COllective Research NETworking (CORNET) scheme is a multi-country (Belgium, Germany, Austria) and multi-partner project aiming to holistically  investigate the additive-subtractive process chain. The project in Flanders (Belgium) is supported by VLAIO. The key objectives of this project are as below:

  • Understand the surface generation phenomenon in Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) based additive-subtractive manufacturing (ASM) through an investigation into the effect of process parameters on surface-specific geometric features and sub-surface properties,
  • Investigation of the interfacial phenomenon in multi-material WAAM-based ASM by designing suitable deposition strategies,
  • Development of a data-driven surface model to predict and control the surface features and thereby formulate machining strategies and enrich machining simulations, and
  • Implementation of the developed technology for demonstration of test cases.

The main responsibilities are:

  • Design and implement additive manufacturing experiments, post-processing,and characterization.
  • Coordinate with involved academic and industrypartners on a regular basis to monitor work progress and ensure timelycompletion of the project objectives.
  • Design strategies for effective utilization ofresources for implementation of research findings on actualuser-cases/demonstrator parts.
  • Coupling experimental results with a data drivennumerical model.
  • Contribute to writing project reports, projectproposals and technology papers.
  • Stay updated on trends in additive manufacturing  and industrial practices,e.g., by participating in conferences and seminars.

Profile

  • Minimum a MSc/MS in Mechanical/Materials/Welding/Manufacturing/Engineeringtechnology or any other comparable study.
  • Willing to work hands-on in laboratory for designingand implementing experiments.
  • Working experience with coding in MATLAB/Python or anyother programming language.
  • Prior knowledge of welding and arc based additive manufacturingis preferable but not mandatory.
  • Acquainted with mechanical testing, sample preparationfor microscopy and characterization.
  • Willing to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Being ambitious, motivated, creative, organized, practicallyskillful, result oriented and willing to take initiative to conductcutting-edge research in close collaboration with industry.
  • Good communication skills and a good knowledge inEnglish (spoken and written) orwilling to improve their language skills.

Offer

Joining the Ad-Proc-Add II project gives you the opportunity to be a key member in this multi-country, multi-partner consortium. We offer you a one-year contract initially, with possibility of extension. The position will be compensated by a competitive salary, including end-of-year and summer holiday bonus. If you are a MSc/MS holder, we offer you a grade 43 as a research associate. If you are a PhD holder you will receive a salary in grade 44 as a research associate. In addition, the successful candidate gets the opportunity to work in enticing and collaborative research environment at the cross-roads of experiments, numerical simulation and applied mathematics, in close contact with key industrial partners. The successful candidate also will have the opportunity to visit and constantly engage with industrial partners in Belgium and visit academic partner institutes in Germany and Austria as and when needed for the project.
