In the Science, Engineering and Technology Group of KU Leuven, Faculty of Engineering Science, Department of Computer Science, Campus Heverlee, there is a full-time academic vacancy for a professor in the area of security and privacy for industrial software systems and applications. The area is interpreted broadly, and covers for example security and privacy, reliability and resilience of digital services, of software products and of internet-based systems. We are looking for an internationally orientated candidate with excellent research experience and educational competence in computer science, and with extensive expertise in the dimension of research valorization, e.g. through consultancy, or through applied R&D projects, through advanced industry training and possibly with experience in the field of creating and supporting startups. The candidate, while being strong in some subdomains of security and privacy, must at the same time be capable in building bridges between multiple disciplines and between academic research and industry adoption. The new faculty member will become a member of the DistriNet research unit, an internationally leading research group with recognized expertise in the areas of security, distributed systems and software engineering. Candidates will be expected to develop an applied research programme that integrates well with the current research activities of the research group, as well as a valorization strategy that can leverage on the track record and best practices of the group. Candidates should also be prepared to provide scientific services both within and outside the university, and to contribute to education at bachelor and master level.

We are looking for a senior candidate with demonstrated expertise in security and privacy. This broad area includes foundations, techniques and supporting tools to create and improve software and systems that deliver high quality properties in terms of security, reliability and privacy. Candidates have obtained excellent research results on some topics within this area, including but not limited to:

  • Security, resilience and/or privacy at various levels of the software technology stack: from the application and service layer over middleware, virtualization, operating systems, and microkernels.
  • The application of security and privacy solutions in various types of contemporary technologies, such as cyber-physical systems, cloud-based systems, the web, mobile environments and applications, wireless systems, IoT, critical infrastructures etc.
  • Trusted computing technology, and the application of this technology in the construction of secure systems and services.
  • Security and Privacy engineering, with tools, methods and techniques that apply to various stages and activities in the software life cycle: from inception over design and implementation, testing and deployment.

As a faculty member, you develop and contribute to research programs at an international level in one of these areas. You develop and deploy a valorization program that addresses applied research in collaboration with industry, contract research when feasible, and the inception of start-ups.

You are expected to collaborate with colleagues within the research group in order to strengthen existing programs, and to drive promising results to accelerated valorization paths. You publish at the highest scientific level, to acquire competitive funding and supervise postdocs, PhD students and senior researchers. 


  • You contribute to high-quality education in computer science and secure systems in the Faculty of Engineering Science and the Faculty of Science, mainly in the master programme, with a clear commitment to the quality of the programme as a whole. You should have evidence of your skills and qualities with respect to teaching at an academic level, or a strong willingness to develop these skills and qualities. Besides, your pedagogical skills will be leveraged upon in the context of creating and delivering advanced industry training.
  • You contribute to the faculty’s and the university’s pedagogical project by guiding student projects (for example bachelor’s and master’s theses) and by supervising PhD students.
  • You develop your teaching in accordance with KU Leuven’s views on activating and research-based education, and make use of the possibilities for educational professionalization offered by the faculty and the university.
  • Proficiency in English is required.
  • The official language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in meetings.
  • Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch, respectively English, to the required standard.


You are prepared to provide scientific, societal and internal services. You play an active part in profiling the Department of Computer Science towards new students and the wider professional field by participating in open days, networking events, fairs, etc.


  • You have a PhD in Computer Science, or an equivalent degree. You have a strong track record in research in the field of software security and privacy, broadly construed.
  • You have a strong research profile. You have a proven track record in acquiring applied research projects and you demonstrate the capability to deliver industry-ready solutions. The quality of your research is proven by publications in leading international journals and conferences. International experience, in an academic and/or industrial context, is an important advantage.
  • You have significant expertise in the dimension of valorization, for example through consultancy, through applied R&D projects, through advanced industry training and other formats of technology transfer.  Real experience in the field of creating and supporting startups is a plus.
  • You have demonstrable qualities related to academic education. The ability to immediately take on a wide range of educational tasks is an advantage.
  • You possess organizational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership competencies in a university context.
  • A good command of English is required. KU Leuven provides courses in academic English.

Depending on your record and qualifications, you will be appointed in one of the (senior) grades of the academic staff: associate professor, professor or full professor. The appointment will become permanent after three years, subject to a positive evaluation.

The appointment starts October 1st  2023.

To facilitate scientific onboarding and accelerate research in the first phase a starting grant of 100.000 euro is offered to new professors without substantial other funding, appointed for at least 50%."
