Mechanical engineering has a significant contribution to new technologies and methodologies in digital transformation of machines and systems.
The Automation Technology and Mechanical Engineering Unit at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences conducts research and offers education in Automation Technology, Mechanical Engineering, and Robotics. In Mechanical Engineering, our research focuses on aircraft engineering, product development, machine design, production and manufacturing, mechatronics, and robotics. We have active collaboration with local and international industry and research organizations.
Job description
We are seeking highly motivated and accomplished candidates in the broad area of Reliability Engineering in Machine Systems for conducting high-level scientific and technological research with high societal impact. Your research in this field may focus on, for example,
We are particularly interested in candidates whose application area is in aircraft systems and/or intelligent work machines. However, excellent candidates from other application areas are also welcome to apply.
Whilst you may have background in research or industrial applications, you are expected to develop your own scientific research profile. Similarly, you are expected to develop strong industrial networks to promote the societal impact of your research. Your research should strengthen and be complementary to our present research in The Automation Technology and Mechanical Engineering Unit and to address recent and emerging scientific and societal grand challenges such as sustainability in industrial applications.
If successful, you will be placed at the level of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, based on your experience and expertise. While in the early stages of your career the focus is on research, in time you will be expected to contribute increasingly to teaching, curriculum development, and graduate and post-graduate student supervision.
Requirements
You should have a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering, aircraft engineering, automation technology, or a related field. You should also have experience in scientific or technological research in academia or in practice.

We offer
Initial appointment as Assistant Professor and as Associate Professor is for five years and, subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured member of faculty in the end of the first five-year period. Full Professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.
You will be supported by a start-up package that will ease your transition to TAU and in setting up your research group. The start-up package will be negotiated on the basis of your individual needs and may contain several elements from our financial instruments.
Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for an Assistant Professor is approximately 4400-4900 EUR/month and for an Associate Professor approximately 5100-5500 EUR/month and for a professor approximately 6200-6800 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be negotiated for candidates with exceptional experience and/or performance.
