About the PhD-project in "Board leadership and Corporate Governance"

The PhD-position will work with researchers from Organisation and Leadership  and Innovation and Entrepreneurship at USN School of Business. Among other topics, the group holds an extensive research portfolio on board leadership and corporate governance.

This PhD project sets out to explore and explain how board resources, dynamic capabilities, and networks are used for the purpose of value creation, leadership, innovation and entrepreneurial activity.

The project will specifically focus on boards in small and medium sized companies (SMBs). In many countries there are major initiatives to support investments into SMBs as a means of fostering innovation, technology-based entrepreneurship and regional development. As a result, a growing base of research exploring board of directors within SMBs has emerged. This research has highlighted the importance and distinctiveness of these boards. Nevertheless, most of the research so far has been quantitative, in form of descriptive and cross-sectional studies which has not given much insight into the inner workings and the so called “black box” of board processes within these boards. This project will therefore be qualitative and possibly also partly quantitative in nature using a triangulation of methods combining interviews, observations and surveys.

Depending on the focus of the PhD candidate, potential research areas include, but are not limited to:

  • How highly job-related diversity attributes to different degrees and in different directions  impact entrepreneurial and dynamic processes within boards
  • How board of directors in different types of firms work with and focus on sustainability in different forms.
  • How boards of directors respond to changing strategic contexts that are caused by digitalization
  • How boards of directors in different types of companies contribute to entrepreneurship and value creation.

The applicant must be familiar with theoretical perspectives of organizational theory, and/or management, and relevant methods (both qualitative and quantitative research methods).

  • Applicants must hold a Master of Science (120 ECTS) in marketing, business, management, or equivalent with documented command of research methodology with average grade B or higher.
  • The degree must be accomplished before the commencement date.
  • Highly qualified candidates with other educational backgrounds may be considered. Candidates with other backgrounds must at a minimum have a master level course in research methods and a master level course in their main field of  study.
  • Applicants with MSc degrees from institutions outside Europe must document GMAT results of a minimum of 600 points (or GRE equivalent).
  • Candidates must have an excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • The candidate must have the ability to work independently and at the same time have the motivation to share knowledge and take part in team work.
  • Research and project work experience and publication record are desirable.
  • Personal suitability for the post will be emphasised.
  • Co-operation between staff members is an integral part of the working environment at the University of South-Eastern Norway. The candidate must be motivated and demonstrate a proven ability to work effectively within a team and in a collegiate manner to formulate and realise common objectives.
