The Louvain Research Institute for Landscape, Architecture and Built Environment (LAB) at the University of Louvain, Belgium, is looking for a motivated and qualified post-doctoral research associate to join an interdisciplinary research project on novel cross-boundary approaches in the field of Urban Metabolism, funded by the Belgian Research Council F.R.S-FNRS. The post-doctoral position is of a duration of 18 months and is part of the interdisciplinary research group, Urban Metabolism Lab, led by prof. Daniela Perrotti.

The aim of the project is to challenge the conceptual and methodological boundaries of the Urban Metabolism field (its modelling approaches and underpinning systems theory) through the development of a conceptual framework and integrated model decision system which will build on synthesis across social and urban ecology.

The project involves two other postdoc researchers in industrial ecology and philosophy of science with whom the researcher will work in close collaboration, providing her/his own expertise to leverage the development of the conceptual framework and model decision system. In particular, s/he will engage with a set of under-explored concepts and models that can further extend the theoretical and methodological spectrum of the Urban Metabolism field through novel disciplinary contributions still insufficiently connected to the study of the metabolism of urban systems (e.g. cognitive science and information theory). Cross-fertilization of social and urban ecology with these novel inputs will be fostered through nexus thinking among concepts and methods, which will further enhance the interdisciplinary outreach of the research.

The strong interdisciplinary drive of the research will also be nourished by continued dialogue with scientists in industrial, social, and urban ecology and collaboration with local communities of practice in Brussels through a series of engagement and dissemination activities across the research.

The conceptual framework and model decision system will be tested in the Brussels Capital Region, in the context of its wider metropolitan area. Existing datasets on urban ecology fluxes and resource inflows and outflows will be compiled and complemented through a bottom up and qualitative approach including fieldwork on selected flows as well as surveys, questionnaires, interviews, and focus groups with local stakeholders (policy, industry, society).

Start date: Between February and March 2023.

The postdoc researcher will be based at the Brussels campus of the LAB Institute, Rue Henri Wafelaerts 47,1060 Brussels.

Further details about this position can be obtained from Prof. Daniela Perrotti, daniela.perrotti@uclouvain.be
