The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI), at the Department for Environment, Construction and Design (DACD) based in Mendrisio, is offering a Researcher position for the Photovoltaic Characterisation and Reliability team, part of the photovoltaic sector. Degree of occupancy: 100%. Entry into operation: to be defined.

Context

The candidate will have the opportunity to work in a well-established and internationally recognised research team in the field of testing and reliability, joining several activities focused mainly on the interaction of modules at system level. The main objective will be to coordinate and manage activities related to the testing, monitoring and data analysis of photovoltaic modules and systems, including integrated ones (IPV), ensuring their quality and performance and eventually high-lighting infant criticalities/problems of PV technologies.

Responsibilities and activities

  • To design and develop outdoor performance testing and technology benchmarking techniques of PV modules and systems.
  • To investigate degradation and reliability of crystalline silicon technologies in the field.
  • To analyse large datasets to extract key performance indicators for module technologies or systems, supporting industry and market.
  • To initiate new projects and grant applications in the field of PV modules and systems’ outdoor testing.
  • To prepare documentation, e.g., test reports, manuals, monitoring reports in R&D projects.
  • To participate in national and international research projects.
  • To collaborate with national and international industry and partners.
  • To present and publish the scientific results at international and national congresses and on scientific publications.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering, physics, mechatronics, solar energy engineering or equivalent qualification, a doctoral degree is an advantage.
  • At least five years' experience in the field of photovoltaics in a national and international context.
  • Experience in scientific research, project management and teamwork.
  • Experience in performance analysis methods: e.g., module characterisation, sensor technology, data logging systems, time series data analysis, statistical analysis, fault detection and performance modelling.
  • Knowledge of PV module and system technologies. Knowledge of failure mechanisms related to PV is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research.
  • Proven experience in preparing reports, publishing scientific articles and presenting results at industry conferences.
  • Knowledge of IEC standards for photovoltaic modules and/or systems.
  • Ability to use common programming languages: Python, Matlab, C ++ (or similar) for the purpose of data analysis, as well as developer tools like ggplot/matplotlib, and version control (e.g.,github).
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language; knowledge of Italian and German language is an asset.

We offer

  • 4-year contract on national and international research projects.
  • Opportunities for professional and academic development and growth.
  • Responsibility for development of field testing, monitoring and data analysis of photovoltaic modules and systems at SUPSI
  • Interdisciplinary work environment and involvement in research projects of national and European relevance, in contact with leading partners, companies and professionals.
  • Collaboration with a dynamic and experienced team in research and development projects.
  • Collaboration with the ISO 17025 accredited SUPSI PVLab test laboratory, BIPV team and access to a large outdoor demonstration and testing facility.

Additional information

Additional information can be obtained from Dr. Roman Rudel (roman.rudel@supsi.ch)

In addition to the documents to be sent at the time of online application (cover letter/motivation, Curriculum Vitae, diplomas, certificates and certificates of employment), additional documentation (criminal record, copy of an identity document) may be requested at a later date.

Applications will be considered only if submitted electronically within September 8th, 2024, through the appropriate form. Applications that are incomplete, submitted to other addresses, or submitted beyond the deadline, will be not accepted.
