The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for the post of Professor/Associate Professor (Tenure Track) of Computational Engineering at the Department of Technical Physics of the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology on the Kuopio campus. The position will be filled from 1 March 2025 (or as agreed). In addition to a permanent professorship, the position can also be applied for at the Associate Professor/Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) level, in which case the position will be filled for a fixed term of four years starting from 1 March 2025 (or as agreed).

Role and salary

The field of the post of Professor/Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in teaching and research is Computational Engineering. The post will strengthen the competence and expertise of the Department of Technical Physics in computational engineering related artificial intelligence. Combining advanced physical models with artificial intelligence methods and applying them to the design of technological equipment are special development targets.

The duties of the Professor/Associate Professor include conducting, developing and managing research in the field and related national and international education, as well as responsibility for scientific postgraduate education in the field in accordance with the job title. The professorship emphasises comprehensive leadership and responsibility for research and education in the field.

The Professor/Associate Professor will be responsible for the acquisition of external funding and for international research cooperation and networking in the field. The post also includes societal expert and interaction activities.

In this position, the Tenure Track can be entered from the levels of Assistant Professor/Associate Professor (Tenure Track), and each career stage may last a maximum of four years. The criteria, goals and results to be achieved during the term in order to proceed to the next level of the Tenure Track will be agreed upon in detail with the person appointed to the post when the contract of employment is signed. Meeting the criteria specified in the contract is a requirement for proceeding to the next level of the Tenure Track. At the end of the term, the merits of the person will be evaluated to determine whether they can proceed to the next level of the Tenure Track, i.e., from the Assistant Professor level to the Associate Professor level or from the Associate Professor level to the Professor level.

The post of Professor will be filled as of 1 March 2025 (or as agreed) until further notice. At the Associate Professor/Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) level, the post will be filled for a four-year term starting on 1 March 2025 (or as agreed). The position is filled for a fixed term due to it being a fixed-term research and teaching position (Tenure Track). A probationary period is applied to all new members of the UEF staff.

External expert evaluation will be used in the recruitment. After the experts have submitted their statements, the Appointments Committee preparing the recruitment will interview the applicant.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job-related salary element and a personal salary element. In the case of a Professor, the job-related salary element is in this position based on levels 8–11 (EUR 5,223.57 – 7,697.25 /month); in the case of an Associate Professor (Tenure Track), on level 7 (EUR 4,320.23 month); and in the case of an Assistant Professor (Tenure Track), on levels 6–7 (EUR 3,747.44 – 4,320.23 /month) of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff. The personal performance component can be a minimum of 6% and a maximum of 50% of the job-related salary element.

  • At the Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) level, a suitable doctoral degree and good teaching skills are required.

When the Tenure Track is entered from the Assistant Professor level, the merits of the person will be evaluated at the end of the term to determine whether they can proceed to the next level of the Tenure Track (Associate Professor).

  • The language of instruction in the post can be English.

  • At the Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) level, demonstrated achievements in the acquisition of research funding will be considered an advantage
