Within the University, the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) is a highly interdisciplinary research centre (IC), integrating experimental biology and computational biology approaches in order to develop the foundation of a future predictive, preventive and personalized medicine.

Your Role...

The European Union Green Deal H2020 project “Zero Pollution of Persistent, Mobile substances” (ZeroPM) launched on October 1st, 2021 for 5 years, with 15 international partners. ZeroPM will develop prevention, prioritisation and removal strategies to protect the environment and human health from persistent, mobile (PM) substances and establish an evidence-based multilevel framework to guide policy, technological and market incentives to minimise use, emissions and pollution of groups of PM substances. 

The Environmental Cheminformatics Research Group at LCSB is seeking a PhD Candidate to contribute to the Substance Grouping Work Package 5 (WP5) of ZeroPM, on the topic “Cheminformatics Strategies for Identifying Persistent, Mobile Contaminants and their Transformation Products”. The PhD will be supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emma Schymanski and performed in collaboration with other WP5 partners, Prof. Hans Peter Arp (NGI) and Dr. Zhanyun Wang (EMPA). The PhD will focus on developing cheminformatics approaches to prioritize and group PM substances, plus identify related transformations.

What we expect from you…

We seek a highly motivated student with the following profile:

  • Master’s degree (MSc or equivalent) in chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, environmental sciences, toxicology or related fields, with high motivation to address pressing pollution issues
  • Willingness to work closely with other ZeroPM partners and cooperate actively in a larger team
  • Experience in cheminformatics data analysis/workflows in R or other open software will be a plus
  • Fluency in English is essential, skills in German and/or French will be advantageous
