The Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) at the University of Luxembourg brings together expertise from the humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, social and educational sciences.
People from across 20 disciplines are working within the Faculty. Along with the disciplinary approach a very ambitious interdisciplinary research culture has been developed. The faculty's research and teaching focuses on social, economic, political and educational issues with the common goal of contributing to an inclusive, open and resourceful society.
Your role
Established in 2011, the UNESCO Chair in Human Rights has a broad mission to promote teaching, research, and public outreach activities in the area of human rights. Assuming a distinctive role within the University, in relation to national society, and through international connections, the Chair acts as a bridgebuilder between research and policy-making, academia and civil society, local communities and the private sector.
The successful candidate will join Professor Robert Harmsen in supporting the full range of the Chair's activities. The postdoctoral researcher will also have the scope to pursue an individual research agenda in a relevant area. Research interests focusing on one or more of the following areas are particularly welcome: 1). The United Nations human rights system and its main constituent entities; 2). The major regional systems (European, Interamerican, African) for the protection of human rights; and/or 3). Issues of academic freedom and the development of regional/international instruments for its protection.
Key responsibilities:
- Assume a major role in the conceptualisation and organisation of the Chair's public outreach and wider educational activities
- Contribute to the completion of a research project on the place of human rights in national (Luxembourgish) foreign policy
- Pursue an individual research agenda in an area related to the main centres of interest of the Chair, leading to scholarly publications and international conference presentations
- Undertake teaching at the Bachelor's and Master's level, contributing to the delivery of interdisciplinary courses on human rights

Your profile
- Ph.D. degree in Political Science, Law, History or related Social Sciences with a focus on human rights
- Experience of and openness to interdisciplinary research
- Experience in academic event organisation and coordination is an asset
- University-level teaching experience is an asset
- Proficiency in English and French (written and spoken) is required. German and/or Luxembourgish are assets
