Join the best of the academic, corporate, and start-up world, and support AITHYRA, the Research Institute for Biomedical Artificial Intelligence in Vienna by creating and maintaining a valuable working environment for researchers, technicians and administration.

In close partnership with CeMM, the Research Center for Molecular Medicine, both institutes under the umbrella of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), and the administrative leadership of Anita Ender, you will actively contribute to the strategic goals of the research institutes to enable and empower scientists and enable research excellence.

We are building the best place in Europe for outstanding AI Researchers to interact with Life Scientists and collaboratively solve revolutionary biological problems. And we want to be the best employer, fostering an inclusive and diverse culture.

AITHYRA, the place where magic happens!

www.oeaw.ac.at/aithyra/

AITHYRA's mission is to transform the way life sciences are conducted using AI to drive the biological revolution in the next decade, with the ultimate goal of improving human health.

For the Winter Lab, we are looking for a

Senior Scientist, Biology (m/f/d)

for AITHYRA, fulltime, 40 hours per week

Your role

  • Research Leadership: Lead high-throughput genomic screening projects to elucidate mechanisms of small molecule action, with an emphasis on TPD and transcriptional regulation.
  • Mentorship & Supervision: Co-supervise PhD students and starting postdoctoral fellows, offering scientific guidance on experimental strategies and data interpretation.
  • Grant Writing & Documentation: Partner with the Principal Investigator to develop grant proposals, annual reports, and other funding-related materials.
  • Fellowship Support: Provide expertise and editorial support to PhD students and Postdocs preparing fellowship applications.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Work closely with interdisciplinary teams (chemists, computational scientists, and biologists) to advance research milestones and foster a creative, collaborative environment.

Your profile

  • PhD in Life Sciences (Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or related field), with postdoctoral experience in functional genomics or other scalable technologies.
  • Strong publication track record with at least two first-author publications
  • Familiarity with grant writing and the capacity to contribute to competitive proposals.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring abilities, with experience guiding junior scientists are considered a plus
  • Excellent communication written and oral communication skills as well as high accuracy, reliability and excellent interpersonal and organizational skills are a requirement

The Winter Lab

Our lab explores how small molecules can be harnessed to reprogram biological processes, with a particular focus on targeted protein degradation (TPD) and rewiring the transcriptional machinery in cancer. By integrating synthetic chemistry, functional genomics (e.g., CRISPR/Cas9 screens, deep mutational scanning), and emerging AI/ML tools, we aim to tackle previously "undruggable" targets and drive next-generation therapeutic innovation. We have developed several approaches to discover novel chemical neomorphs: small molecules that induce proximity between key proteins, altering their fate or function. This research has not only yielded fundamental biological insights but also led to successful industrial collaborations and spin-out activities.

We offer

  • A forward-looking research vision and a clear path towards delivering impact by (re-)programming disease biology with small molecules
  • An opportunity to develop and pursue independent research projects within the overall scope of the group
  • Dynamic Research Environment: Engage with a team recognized internationally for breakthroughs in translational chemical biology
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work at the interface of small-molecule design, genome-scale experimentation, and computational innovation with a particular focus on AI/ML approaches
  • Professional Development: Build your leadership profile by mentoring early-career researchers and participating in high-impact grant proposals.
  • Strong translational and entrepreneurial mindset with potential to be involved in spin-out activities
  • A wide range of social, cultural and sports activities organized by the Institute.
  • Excellent benefits including insurance coverage, health services (in-house doctor, psychologist, ...), subsidized lunch.
  • Minimum gross monthly salary of EUR 4.932,90 paid 14 times a year.
  • The normal working week is 40 hours. Core working time is the working time during which the employee must be present at the workplace. Monday to Thursday from 09:00 to 15:00 and Friday from 09:00 to 13:00. A maximum of 1 home office day per calendar week may be used.

Application details

Please apply online: https://cemm.onlyfy.jobs/job/t7lhh1kz with the following documents:

  1. Cover Letter (1–2 pages) highlighting your relevant research experience and career goals.
  2. Curriculum Vitae, including a full publication list.
  3. Highlight your two most important publications with a brief summary (300 words/publication)
  4. Contact Information for 3 References (letters will be requested if needed).

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The Institute promotes equal opportunities and is home to a mix of different talents, backgrounds, and competencies.

Join us as Senior Scientist and play a pivotal role in transforming the boundaries of therapeutic discovery-leveraging chemical biology, functional genomics, and AI/ML for breakthrough innovations in cancer research and beyond. We look forward to your application!
