The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

Supported by 21 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) is looking for a motivated scientist to join ID19, a state-of-the-art beamline dedicated to high-resolution X-ray imaging (radiography and microtomography). ID19 is renowned for its advanced experimental setups and intense polychromatic illumination, enabling high-speed phase-contrast X-ray imaging at high photon energies. This makes it an ideal platform for in situ and operando studies of materials, engineering systems, and innovative imaging techniques.

As a scientist at ID19, you will:

- Conduct cutting-edge research in materials science, instrumentation, or related fields, developing your own in-house research project in consultation with your supervisor.

- Support external users (both academic and industrial) in conducting experiments on the beamline.

- Drive technical developments, ensuring continuous upgrades and improvements of the beamline instrumentation.

- Collaborate with international experts, working closely with a multidisciplinary team.

- Present and publish your research findings in conferences, workshops, and peer-reviewed journals.

- Play a key role in dynamic imaging studies, exploring areas such as laser processing of metals, materials under high strain rates, battery research, and geophysics using advanced phase-contrast imaging.

Educational Qualifications

- PhD in Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field.

Technical Skills

- Experience in X-ray imaging techniques (radiography and computed tomography) is highly recommended.

- Familiarity with research infrastructures (e.g., synchrotrons) or similar facilities is a plus.

- Strong background in experimental research, particularly in the development and application of imaging techniques.

Soft Skills

- Ambition to develop and lead research projects, from proposal to publication.

- Ability to collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams and coordinate activities with internal and external colleagues.

- Hands-on approach with a dedication to experimental work.

- Strong communication skills, with experience in presenting research findings at conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

Fluency in English (working language at ESRF).

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
