Description of the research activity:

The research activities are structured along two main lines. First, lignocellulosic biomasses available in mountain areas (agricultural and forestry residues) will be identified and thoroughly characterized by selecting representative samples with partners’ support and performing physico chemical analyses (composition, CHNS and TGA) to assess their suitability for valorisation. Second, within an integrated biomass valorisation approach, the work will focus on the lignin fraction dissolved in black liquor, by developing and validating continuous thermochemical hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) processes. Feedstock rheology and thermal stability will be assessed (DSC/TGA), operating conditions optimised, and product streams (biocrude, aqueous phase, char and gas) analysed through CHNS, TGA and GC MS, culminating in replicable guidelines to support technology transfer.
