It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. The Department of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics is responsible for high-quality education and research from laboratory to clinic and back, in order to provide innovative and patient-oriented care over the entire life course. This vacancy will strengthen the research in infectious diseases and education at the department.
HIV Cure Research Center (HCRC) Ghent offers a vibrant, forward-thinking research environment dedicated to innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. Our laboratory is strategically positioned within a robust network of academic and clinical partners across Belgium and beyond, granting access to excellent scientific expertise and state-of-the-art technologies. As a core partner in the EU2Cure network – comprising leading hiv research institutions across Europe – HCRC Ghent plays a pivotal role in advancing curative strategies for hiv. Our research focuses on harnessing the full potential of cell and gene therapies to achieve sterilizing or functional cures for hiv. We explore the immunological barriers that allow hiv reservoir cells to evade clearance beyond viral latency, while pioneering new strategies to enhance cellular immune responses for the targeted eradication of these persistent reservoirs. Our multidisciplinary approach integrates ex vivo analyses from clinical cohorts, sophisticated in vivo modeling, and the translation of promising interventions into pivotal phase I clinical trials involving people living with hiv (PLWH).
