At Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (HSU/UniBwH), Faculty of Mechanical and Civil Engineering, Professorship for Materials Engineering (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jepsen), a position is available as of 01.06.2025 for a 

Research Assistant (m/f/d)

(salary group 13 TVöD [Collective agreement for the public service]; 39 hours per week)

for a limited period until 31.12.2027. 

The scientific work is carried out in the field of hydrogen technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Experimental and simulative development, production and system integration of innovative hydrogen storage systems based on metal hydrides
  • Participation in conferences for the dissemination of scientific results
  • Preparation and production of scientific publications
  • Assistance in teaching to the extent of basically 3,0 trimester hours per week
  • Possibility of further academic qualification (e.g. doctorate or habilitation) 
  • Carrying out general administrative work as well as academic activities in academic self-administration

Qualification requirements:

  • A completed university degree (Diplom [univ.] or Master) in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, process engineering, energy engineering, materials engineering or comparable disciplines with at least good grades
  • Proven experience in materials engineering, ideally with application to renewable energy systems

Furthermore desired:

  • Software skills (e.g. MatLab, Simulink, Python, ASPEN Plus, Modelica, Open Foam or COMSOL Multiphysics) or the willingness to acquire these as part of the project work
  • Experience in constructive plant and tank construction as well as in plant control and regulation
  • Independent, structured and organized way of working as well as a high degree of team spirit
  • Knowledge of German language and foreign language in English with a proficiency level that corresponds at least to the language level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • Strong interest in scientific work and the ability to teach (in English if necessary)

The employment is based on the TVöD in conjunction with the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz [German Act on Fixed-Term Scientific Contracts]. In principle, the activities correspond to pay group 13 (E13). Classification up to pay group 13 of the TVöD shall be made in accordance with § 12 of the TVöD with regard to the activities to be performed on a more than temporary basis and the fulfilment of the personal or collective agreement requirements (job characteristics).

Part-time employment is possible.
