Who are we ?

Within the RDT Research Unit (Research and Technology Development) the SMASH Laboratory (Structures, Advanced Materials and Hyperbaric loading) contributes to improving the understanding of the time-dependent behaviour of structures at SEA. The laboratory studies the characterization, and prediction of the influence of the marine environment on polymers and composites (chemical degradation, physical aging, hydrostatic pressure and end of life).

The missions of the position are completely in line with IFREMER's Contract of Objectives and Means (COMP) and with the road map of the REM Department (Physical Resources and Deep SEA Ecosystems),

Within the SMASH laboratory the person recruited will BE under the responsibility of the head of laboratory. He or she will contribute to the experimental research activities within national and international projects aiming to develop structures destined to exploit marine resources or to perform under marine conditions.

The researcher recruited will BE responsible for :
- Initiating, coordinating and contributing to research projects with industrial companies and academic partners in the area of the mechanical behaviour and durability of polymer and composites, and in particular fibres, ropes and cables.
- Contributing to the definition, setting-up and analysis of original tests aimed at characterizing polymer materials in the presence of seawater and under different mechanical loading conditions in the laboratory.
- Contributing to the definition of specific sensors to monitor the mechanical behaviour of materials at SEA, and in particular to monitoring of mooring lines ;
- Evaluating the performance of ropes and cables employed for marine operations by the French Oceanographic fleet;
- Developing behaviour laws for polymers in marine environment, integrating the effects of aging.
- Supervising technicians, PhD students and interns in these areas.

What will your mission BE ?

Your main mission is to perform excellent research and innovation while proposing and managing the research projects needed to improve the identification of behaviour laws for the long term response of polymer, fibres, ropes and cables in a marine environment, with the aim of predicting their lifetimes.

What will your activities BE?
- You will bring to the Laboratory an expertise in the mechanics of materials, and in particular of polymer fibres in the form of ropes, nets and cables ;
- You will set up the partnerships and collaborations required to study these materials.
- You will promote the results of the Laboratory by publications, by the development of new solutions for society and by internal and external communications;
- You will participate in the activities of the laboratory, in particular the two priority research topics Durability of polymers and composites' and End of life of polymers';

Environment
- The teams of the SMASH Laboratory and the RDT Unit
- Our industrial and academic partners

How are your activities organised?
