Doctoral Student in Wood Nanotechnology for Energy Storage and Harvesting

The School of Chemical Science and Engineering includes the areas Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Fibre and Polymer Technology. It encompasses both fundamental and applied Chemical sciences and seeks sustainable development through scientific excellence. Many research activities are interdisciplinary across the borders from Chemistry to Materials science, Environmental science, Biochemistry, Biology and Medicine. The School offers a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Chemistry, Degree Programs in Engineering Chemistry, Technical Preparatory Year and three international master programs: Chemical Engineering for Energy and the Environment, Macromolecular Materials and Molecular Science and Engineering. We also cooperate with the master programs Energy and Environment, Materials Design and Biotechnology.

Job description

With the depletion of fossil energy and the growing environmental concerns, pursuing renewable energy sources is of interest. Wood is the most successful bio-based material throughout history for structural applications, owing to its excellent mechanical properties and large-scale availability. With hierarchical structure, excellent cellulose properties, and the combination of micro-, meso-, and macro-pores, wood is an excellent three-dimensional reactor that can be functionalized for energy storage. The project aims to develop wood nanotechnology for better understanding of wood structure and materials design of energy storage devices. The challenges that will be addressed include: 1) methods of wood structural control for highly porous anisotropic wood reactors, 2) preparation of conductive and strong wood templates, 3) energy storage devices based on wood templates.

The project will be carried out at the Wallenberg Wood Science Center. We are looking for a highly motivated doctoral student to work on wood structure control and chemical modification to form wood reactors for electrochemical processes. The work will have an experimental focus and includes wood modification, microscopy techniques, x-ray scattering, mechanical and thermal properties as well as energy storage or energy harvesting performance.

The employment is planned for four years.

Qualifications

A suitable background for the position is a Master of Science in programs such as Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics or related subject. Courses or experience related to electrochemistry and energy storage technologies are helpful. The project is multi-disciplinary and a broad technical background is an advantage. Adequate knowledge related to polymer and/wood science and technology is a merit.

The candidate should be highly motivated for doing scientific research and should have well developed analytical and problem solving skills as well as an interest and curiosity for wood science and technology and electrochemical applications. In addition to the traditional academic merits, a relevant degree project, international experience, and language skills are advantageous qualifications. The ability to work independently is important as well as cooperative and communicative abilities.
