Third-cycle subject: Mechatronics and Embedded Control Systems
Recently, in very tough competition, KTH was awarded a new Swedish competence center on Trustworthy Edge Computing Systems and Applications (TECoSA), planned to start early 2020.
The limitations of centralized cloud computing systems as well as of the local embedded systems, motivate the introduction of a new computing layer, providing substantial computing and storage resources near the user and applications. Here - edge computing systems (alternatively called micro datacenters or fog nodes) have a tremendous market potential with applications in interactive human in the loop applications, real-time data analytics, and collaborative Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS).
The competence center is focusing on research paving the way for novel trustworthy edge computing systems and applications as part of industrial digitalization, emphasizing challenges related to predictability, safety and security
The primary objective of these PhD positions is to increase the trustworthiness, intelligence and efficiency of CPS through edge computing. CPS perform real-time and often safety-critical monitoring, analysis, control, and decision-making functions. The computing tasks of such systems will be distributed between on-device, edge, and cloud – where the edge systems provide opportunities for novel AI-driven applications. Introducing edge computing in the context of CPS requires research to solve challenges for how to provide the desired predictability, safety and security. Desired system properties are often achieved through a novel combination of new algorithms, architectures and fast and secure communications. Design methods, tools and architectures will be developed to support modeling, simulation, optimization, verification, validation and safety assurance of trustworthy edge-computing based cyber-physical systems.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be placed at the Royal Institute of Technology and supervised by Professors in Mechatronics and Embedded Control Systems.

To qualify for the position it is required that you have a M.Sc. degree in mechatronics, embedded systems, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, robotics, or equivalent. It is also required that you have good knowledge in systems science and co-design methods and tools.

Doctoral students may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
