The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, within the Science and Technology Group at KU Leuven, is a department with 38 full-time professors, about 240 researchers and 24 full-time administrative and technical staff.
The main mission of the Department is to conduct high quality scientific research on the functioning of geo- and ecosystems at different temporal and spatial scales, including human-environment interactions and the sustainable management of natural resources.
The members of the Department provide high quality education in the fields of bioengineering, geography, geology and tourism. The Department aims to play a major role in societal issues such as environmental pollution, food production, climate change, forest, green and nature management, soil and water management, subsoil exploitation, urban and rural issues, development cooperation and tourism.

Project

Sub-Neptunes are one of the most commonly found exoplanets in the galaxy, yet no solar system analogues exist. Hotter counterparts of sub-Neptunes present a unique case of present-day molten rock–gas (magma–atmosphere) interactions. The James Webb Space Telescope is deriving elemental ratios of gas molecules in sub-Neptune atmospheres. These ratios are key to understanding primitive conditions at the time of formation and are likely modified due to the dissolution of atmospheric gases into magma. However, there is a lack of laboratory data on gas solubility at conditions representing the magma–atmosphere interface of sub-Neptunes. The goal of this project is to determine the gas solubility in magma by performing high-pressure, high-temperature experiments and analyses with state-of-the-art instruments. 

Profile

At the start of the project, the PhD applicant should have obtained an MSc degree in geological sciences or physics or an equivalent diploma. High proficiency in English is required. An academic background in exoplanet/planetary sciences and/or experimental petrology is an asset. Experience with high-pressure, high-temperature devices such as piston cylinders and multi-anvil presses is desired but not necessary. The ideal applicant demonstrates motivation and commitment, possesses strong problem-solving skills, and is willing to work across disciplines.

Offer

The selected PhD candidate will be offered a scholarship for up to four years. The salary will be commensurate with the standard scale for PhD candidates at KU Leuven. The preferred starting date is October 1st, 2025, but it is negotiable.
The successful PhD applicant will register at the Arenberg Doctoral School of KU Leuven and follow a doctoral program that includes personal training in management, science communication, and teaching. The candidate will participate in performing experiments and analyses and learn how to use renowned large-scale facilities, including synchrotrons (e.g., ESRF, PETRA). They will be able to participate in local and international conferences to build their scientific network. As part of the doctoral requirements, the candidate will teach as a teaching assistant in one of the BSc (in Dutch) or MSc (in English) programs. There will also be opportunities to supervise bachelor and master students.
