The research group “Meat Technology and Science of Protein-rich Foods” (MTSP) is part of the Science and Technology Group (Department of Microbial and Molecular Systems (M2S), Division of Food and Microbial Technology) at KU Leuven, Campus Ghent, and has expertise in the processing and analysis of protein-rich food products such as meat and fish products, vegetarian or vegan meat alternatives and analogues. The research group is equipped with a well-developed pilot infrastructure for processing all types of meat products and their alternatives, as well as a fully equipped analytical laboratory.

Responsibilities

The full-time position comprises teaching duties (50%) and research activities (50%) within the field of food chemistry and/or food process engineering, in particular in the application domain of protein-rich foods.

The teaching assignment is situated within the Faculty of Engineering Technology at KU Leuven, Campus Ghent, in the context of the academic bachelor, master's programmes, and bridging programmes in chemistry and biochemistry, and includes:

  • Delivering lectures in “Biochemistry” within the academic bachelor of engineering technology
  • Supervising practical sessions within the academic bachelor, master's programmes, and bridging programmes in chemistry and biochemistry (“General and Advanced Microbiology”, “Enzymology”, “Biochemical Separation and Immunological Techniques”, and “Industrial Processes: Meat Technology”). This includes hands-on support during lab sessions, as well as preparation and follow-up activities, keeping course materials up to date and developing new teaching content
  • Supervising bachelor’s and master’s thesis projects within the domain
  • Actively contributing to PR and recruitment activities (information days, STEM workshops for secondary school students, etc.)

The research assignment involves conducting state-of-the-art, application-oriented and scientifically high-level research within the research group “Meat Technology and Science of Protein-rich Foods”, with valorisation towards the food industry. This includes:

  • Supervising PhD students and technical staff in the execution of research
  • Acquiring research funding from national (VLAIO, FWO, KU Leuven internal funds) and international agencies
  • Publishing in international scientific journals
  • Actively developing and maintaining a (inter)national network of companies, researchers, and other stakeholders

Profile

  • You hold a PhD or doctoral degree in bioscience engineering, engineering technology, or another field providing a comparable background for the teaching and research programme
  • You have a solid knowledge of and expertise in food chemistry, food microbiology and/or food technology, and are motivated to valorize this through applied research
  • You have a strong interest in teaching and supervising students
  • You are a true team player with leadership skills and the ability to work independently
  • You have an excellent command of Dutch, allowing you to immediately take on a teaching role for Dutch-speaking students
