Overview:

The UM6P invites applications for the position of Professor of Practice in Chemical Engineering or Biotechnology Engineering. This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position focused on bridging the gap between academic theory and industrial practice. The successful candidate will play a key role in enhancing the department’s teaching, mentoring, and outreach initiatives by bringing real-world industry experience into the classroom and laboratory. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in chemical engineering, biotechnology engineering, or a closely related field, combined with significant practical experience in industry.

Responsibilities:

Teaching and Course Development:

  • Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses in chemical engineering or biotechnology engineering.
  • Focus on applied, hands-on learning, including lab-based courses, case studies, and real-world problem-solving.
  • Integrate industrial experience into the curriculum to enrich student learning.
  • Collaborate with faculty to update and improve the department’s course offerings.
  • Support continuous improvement of the department’s educational offerings and activities.

Industry Collaboration and Mentorship:

  • Foster relationships with industry partners to enhance the department’s connections to the professional world.
  • Serve as a mentor to students pursuing internships, co-ops, and career opportunities in industry.
  • Facilitate guest lectures, workshops, and industry site visits to provide 
  • Engage in applied research projects that address real-world challenges in chemical engineering or biotechnology engineering.
  • Collaborate with industry partners, government agencies, and other academic institutions on projects with practical significance.
  • Contribute to the development of new technologies, processes, or solutions relevant to the field.

Student Engagement and Advising:

  • Provide academic advising and career counseling to students in the Chemical Engineering or Biotechnology Engineering programs.
  • Supervise student research projects, capstone projects, and internships.
  • Promote and support student participation in professional development activities, conferences, and networking events.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Eng. or Ph.D. or equivalent professional experience in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology Engineering, or a closely related field.

Industry Experience:

  • At least 5 years of significant experience in a leadership or senior technical role within the chemical or biotechnology industry.
  • Demonstrated expertise in applied chemical or biotechnology engineering, including process design, product development, scale-up, or manufacturing.

Teaching Experience:

  • Prior experience teaching at the university level is preferred but not required.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex concepts effectively to students from diverse backgrounds.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, and industry partners.
  • Practical knowledge of current industry trends, technologies, and challenges in chemical or biotechnology engineering.
  • A commitment to innovative, hands-on, and experiential learning methods.
