Are you a cloud tech specialist who understands data pipelines and data lakes? We are looking for a developer in the role of Data Engineer for a permanent position in the IT and Digitalisation service group.

Luke has numerous resource platforms, including research barns, aquaculture farms, and research forests and fields equipped with monitoring instrumentation, producing a diverse set of data streams from sensors and IoT devices. Together with our researchers, we are at the forefront of developing digital tools for the industry and society in Finland and abroad, promoting the sustainable use of natural resources.

As a Data Engineer you will design, develop, and maintain the cloud-based infrastructure and systems necessary to store, process, and analyse data from research platforms and other data sources at Luke. You will collaborate with data managers who support Luke's personnel in data governance.

Successfully managing the task requires a relevant higher education degree (e.g., Master of Science or Engineering in Information Technology, Master of Science in Information Systems, Bachelor of Engineering or IT Business Professional) or demonstrated work experience in similar roles. We also consider applicants in the final stages of their studies.

Our expectations of the applicant

We expect the applicant to have strong collaboration and communication skills, a proactive and self-directed work approach, problem-solving abilities, the capacity to grasp complexities, and the ability to communicate and document solutions in both Finnish and English. We appreciate experience in agile development, producing cloud-native applications, good stress tolerance, and a customer-centric mindset.

The best qualifications for performing the task are provided by:

• Practical technical expertise and understanding to develop cost-effective solutions.
• Strong proficiency in Python, Unix/Linux, and SQL.
• Data modeling and database design knowledge.
• Skills in documenting systems and describing architecture.
• Familiarity with a collaborative culture where teamwork is valued more than individual
effort.

In addition, we value experience and interest in the following:

• Experience with Microsoft Azure cloud services.
• Development experience with PostgreSQL and PostGIS.
• Proficiency in scripting languages, especially Bash.
• Knowledge of virtualization solutions (Docker).
• Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC; Terraform or Bicep).
• Experience with Azure Data Factory and Databricks services, or equivalent services in
other cloud environments.
• Familiarity with agile development and teamwork.
• Knowledge of CI/CD methods (e.g., GitHub Actions).
• Experience in designing software architectures and interfaces, and managing application
lifecycles.
• Understanding and interest in the research sectors of the Natural Resources Institute
Finland (forestry, agriculture, game and hunting, fishery)

We offer youThe well-being of our people and a positive approach towards innovation and development are particularly important to us. Our mobile work model allows you to work in Finland in the location most appropriate for your work. In addition, we provide flexible hours, and as your employment with us continues, long vacations. We offer lunch benefits, as well as sports, culture, or commuting support.
