SOLEIL is the French national synchrotron facility, located on the Saclay Plateau near Paris. It is a multi-disciplinary instrument and research laboratory whose mission is to conduct research using synchrotron radiation, to develop cutting edge instrumentation on the beamlines, and to make these developments available to the scientific community. SOLEIL synchrotron, a unique tool for both academic research and industrial applications across a wide range of disciplines including physics, biology, chemistry etc., opened in 2008. It is used annually by thousands researchers from France and abroad. SOLEIL is based on a synchrotron source that is state-of-the-art both in terms of brilliance and stability. This large scale facility, a partner of the Université Paris Saclay, is a “publically owned” private company, founded by the CNRS and the CEA.

This position is in the Optics Group within the SCIENCE division.

Group Description

Within the SCIENCE division, the Optics Group is responsible for the design and maintenance of optical equipment on the beamlines. It develops or specifies the necessary components and ensures their metrological control. This group consists of 5 research engineers, 1 engineer or assistant engineer specialized in Optics-X and optical thin films.

I.Mission

As an Optical Metrology Engineer at SOLEIL, their mission is to design, implement, and evolve control and acceptance procedures for the optical elements of the beamlines. They work for the Optical Metrology Laboratory (LMO), separate from the Metrology beamline, and their instrumental park includes:

An atomic force microscope (AFM)

A large pupil Fizeau interferometry bench with field stitching (TITAN)

A Michelson interferometry bench with field stitching (MINT)

An optical profilometer (LTP)

A high-resolution spatial interferometry bench (roughness measurement device)

They ensure technological watch, develops specific instruments, and maintains them at the highest level of excellence. They contribute to the development of control and measurement tools for the instruments in the LMO instrument park. He works to maintain the LMO's accreditation to the ISO 17025 standard for its measurements as the deputy of the person in charge of the LMO.They carry out their work in close interaction with other members of the group to verify the feasibility of optics designed by the group and the group's ability to measure optics as specified (in terms of tolerances). Furthermore, they actively propose and analyze the design of optical mounting systems on the beamlines by interacting with the engineers responsible for the assembly and alignment of optics within the optical group.Their participation in the group's research mission is focused on the development of new instruments and methods in the field of innovative optical systems.

II. Responsibilities and Tasks

1. Measurements and Data Analysis

Perform measurements according to defined procedures ;

Use tools developed by the group and in collaborations (such as phase unwrapping, field connection, statistical analysis, …) to analyze the measurement data ;

Demonstrate critical thinking regarding the measurements ;

Contribute to the development of calculation tools for data analysis.

2. Quality and Reliability of Measurements

Handle client relations and translate client requirements into calibration requirements ;

Participate in the calibration processes and supervise the metrological confirmation process ;

Participate in planning measurements and interventions within the LMO ;

Prepare measurement reports, validate, sign, and deliver them to the client ;

Organize and manage metrological traceability of equipment ;

Control installations and inform the responsible person in the optics group of necessary maintenances.

3. Development and Instrumental Design

Maintain the existing instrumental park ;

Develop new methods and instruments.

4. External Relations

Participate in inter-laboratory comparisons with equivalent laboratories ;

Contribute to exchanges within the CNRS Opticians Network (ROP).

5. Maintain LMO Accreditation

Prepare, verify, and have applied procedures validated ;

Ensure compliance with procedures ;

Participate in the COFRAC audits for the LMO accreditation.
