The Thermal Analysis Infrastructure of the Hervanta Campus includes a wide variety of equipment to characterize different material properties as a function of temperature and time, such as Differential Scanning Calorimeter, Thermogravimetric Analyser, Laser Flash Analyser, Dilatometer, Dynamic Mechanical Analyser, and Rotational Rheometer. The infrastructure is used by various research groups from several different faculties of Tampere University, other universities, as well as companies. The position is located on the Hervanta Campus in the ENRE Research Environment Unit of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences.
Job description
Staff Scientists are academic personnel who are responsible for specialist activities related to research, providing support to teaching and research staff. The responsibilities of Staff Scientists involve the use and development of research infrastructures and research equipment as well as promoting laboratory safety. Their individual job descriptions are defined in relation to the University’s strategic needs and include teaching, research, and the provision of services.
The primary tasks of the Staff Scientist to be recruited include supporting researchers in experimental work with thermal analysis equipment as well as the maintenance and development of the current and future infrastructure and laboratories. The objective in the position is to ensure that the Thermal Analysis Infrastructure is used to provide reliable and high-quality data that serves the purpose of ambitious research objectives. Therefore, the tasks include supporting researchers in designing and operating the experimental setups as well as data processing and management. In addition, one of the main tasks for the upcoming years is to support the relocation project of the dispersed Thermal Analysis Infrastructure in Hervanta campus to the new Noodi laboratory building. This will require planning, coordination and implementation of the relocation with other staff members to ensure a well-functioning and safe working environment in the new Thermal Analysis Laboratory. Also, the tasks entail systematic updating and development of the infrastructure in the Thermal Analysis Laboratory including procurement and public tendering of the equipment, and strong focus on developing the laboratory safety protocols to ensure safe operation of the infrastructure.
The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work with different research groups who study thermal behaviour of polymers, metals, ceramics, natural and biobased materials, composites, and other substances. The work in the Thermal Analysis Laboratory includes collaboration with persons at varying research career stages from different disciplines inside and outside the academia. Also, Staff Scientists can have a direct role in various research projects. Thus, the position will enable the successful candidate to apply and develop their expertise in thermal properties of material and thermoanalytical methods.
