We are inviting applications for a Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) position in Signal Processing. The research topic will lie in the intersection of statistical signal processing and optimization, with an emphasis on theory and algorithms. Key focus applications include array signal processing for sensing (e.g., radar, RF imaging, sonar) and wireless communications, where multisensor (MIMO) systems are, and will continue to be, a core technology.

In this position, the candidate is expected to:

  1. carry out high-quality research on mutually agreed topics, as well as publish / present results in top international signal processing and machine learning journals / conferences
  2. complete a doctoral degree, including mandatory study credits required,
  3. assist in teaching tasks and undergraduate supervision (up to 5% of total working time).

The work will be supervised by Assistant Professor Robin Rajamäki. For a flavor of the type of research to be expected, see:

The position is located in the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences, in the Unit of Computing Sciences. The work will be conducted on site, by default, as we encourage active participation in the local and vibrant research community. Partial remote work (e.g., 1–2 days a week) is possible, as separately negotiated.

Requirements and further details

To qualify for this position, the candidate should have a master’s degree (or equivalent eligibility for doctoral studies) from electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science, or another applicable field by the start of employment (January 1st, 2027 at the latest). A mathematical maturity and interest in theory-driven research grounded in mathematical modeling of physical systems is expected. Furthermore, the candidate should possess a solid foundation in signal processing; basic knowledge of statistics; a proficiency in MATLAB, Python, or an equivalent programming language; and strong oral and written communication skills in English (including satisfaction of the language skill requirements of the doctoral program of the discipline; see below).
