Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our university community has competitive edges in technology, health and society.www.tuni.fi/en

Joining Tampere University means becoming part of one of Europe's leading photonics ecosystems, where fundamental discoveries translate into next-generation technologies. At the heart of this environment is the Photonics Laboratory, which coordinates the national Photonics Research and Innovation (PREIN) flagship and contributes to Finland's Future Chips initiative, accelerating the development of next-generation integrated photonics. Researchers benefit from access to a unique infrastructure that spans advanced optical laboratories, together with state-of-the-art nanofabrication facilities including the SiPFAB pilot line established within the broader Chips for Europe Initiative

Within this vibrant setting, the rapidly expanding MetaPhotonics Group explores how light can be controlled at the nanoscale through metasurfaces, nonlinear nanophotonics, and quantum light–matter interactions. The successful applicant will play a key role in advancing one or more of the following research directions: high harmonic generation in nanostructured solids with key applications in extreme ultraviolet light sources, nanoscale optical isolators for chip-scale logic, nanoresonators for single-photon sources, and entangled two-photon absorption for quantum photochemistry with applications in photodynamic therapy.

As part of our team, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Contribute to research at the forefront of nanophotonics.
  • Work with state-of-the-art nanofabrication facilities, advanced optical laboratories, and high-performance computing infrastructure.
  • Receive mentorship tailored to your career goals, including opportunities for supervision, grant applications, teaching, and industry engagement.

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in optics, photonics or a closely related field. The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • A PhD in Physics, Optics, Photonics, Engineering, or a related discipline, or a doctoral thesis submitted for examination.
  • Relevant experience in one or more of the following areas: cleanroom nanofabrication, optical measurement techniques, or computational design of nanophotonic components.
  • A proven ability to conduct original research independently, evidenced by scholarly outputs such as peer‑reviewed publications.
  • Potential to develop innovative research ideas and translate them into competitive funding applications, including individual fellowships.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to mentor junior researchers and contribute to productive collaborations.

We offer

The full-time position will be filled for a fixed-term period of two (2) years, starting upon mutual agreement. A trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on the University Salary System. The salary of a postdoctoral researcher is at levels 5-6. In addition to the basic salary, a supplementary portion of the salary will be paid based on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. A typical starting salary varies between EUR 4000-4500 per month.

The University offers a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus, and several on-campus restaurants and cafés with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University
