The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Université Laval invites applications for a faculty position in mathematics, specializing in algebra and number theory. While applications from all subfields of algebra are welcome, priority will be given to candidates with specific expertise or a strong interest in representation theory. This recruitment aims to develop a core structuring axis in this field and related areas. The appointment will normally be at the rank of assistant professor, with an expected start date in the summer of 2027

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • conduct and publish research in their area of expertise;
  • seek funding from major granting agencies;
  • recruit and supervise graduate students;
  • teach undergraduate and graduate mathematics courses in French, including large-enrollment service courses;
  • contribute to the management and promotion of the department's programs;
  • and, more broadly, participate in the development and smooth operation of the

Department of Mathematics and Statistics, the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and Université Laval.

Selection Criteria

  • Hold, or be near completion of, a PhD (or an equivalent degree) in mathematics, preferably in algebra.
  • Demonstrated ability or clear potential to deliver high-quality university teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Demonstrated research ability and potential to develop a productive, independent, and original research program.
  • Potential to collaborate with existing members of the algebra and number theory team on topics such as combinatorics, Lie theory, and algebraic number theory.
  • Demonstrated ability or capacity to recruit and supervise graduate students in the department's mathematics programs.
  • Demonstrated potential or commitment to institutional and community service.
  • Ability to teach in French, or a commitment to become fluent enough to do so within one year, along with the capacity to integrate into the institution's Francophone environment within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Alignment of professional potential with the core competencies required for a faculty role:
    • Analytical skills, capacity for synthesis, and sound judgment;
    • Creativity and innovation;
    • Strong communication skills;
    • Interpersonal skills and openness;

Terms of Employment

Salary is commensurate with the collective agreement in effect.

  • a research proposal (maximum of four pages) detailing their research program for the next three years;
  • a teaching statement (maximum of two pages) detailing their teaching philosophy;
  • up to three articles (reprints or preprints).
