YOUR TASKS

A full professorship (W3) position for Human Genetics is open at the University of Cologne. The position includes the directorship of the Institute for Human Genetics. The successful candidate is expected to represent the area of Human Genetics in research and teaching as well as the clinical involvement within the Institute of Human Genetics (together with the professor for Clinical Genetics), the teaching and training of undergraduate and post-graduate students as well as the supervision of PhD candidates in the discipline of Human Genetics.
Beside research of genetic diseases the University is intended to further advance the field of genomic medicine and molecular therapies. The professor should substitute and collaborate on the areas of clinical genetics, hereditary tumor diseases, pathology and genome sciences.

YOUR PROFILE

We are seeking an outstanding academic in the field of human genetics. Excellent scientific achievements and an active participation in teaching and shaping new programs in the medical curriculum and other undergraduate and graduate programs in which the Faculty of Medicine is involved is expected.
Finally, participation in joint research activities of the Faculty along with participation in the self-government of the Faculty is expected.
The title “Facharzt/Fachärztin für Humangenetik” and achievements equivalent to habilitation in research and education are mandatory.

According to § 39 para. 1 HG, professors with tasks in patient care are, in principal, employed under private law. As such, the tasks in patient care assigned to the professorship are regulated in a separate contract with the University Hospital.

The position begins on 01.02.2026. Formal requirements are detailed in Section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz - HG NRW). As a rule, the teaching load comprises nine teaching hours per week (two teaching hours is one 90-minute weekly course per semester).
