The University of Cologne is one of the oldest and largest universities in Germany. With its six Faculties covering a broad spectrum of disciplines and its internationally outstanding research profile areas, it enjoys an excellent reputation for its academic achievements and high standards of undergraduate and graduate education. The Department of Classics (Institut für Altertumskunde) is one of the largest in the German-speaking world and encompasses the areas of Classical Philology, Byzantine Studies and Medieval Latin Philology, as well as the area of Papyrology, Epigraphy and Numismatics. It offers degree programs in Greek and Latin, Ancient Languages and Cultures with specializations in Latin, Greek, Classical Philology, Medieval Latin, Byzantine Studies, Papyrology/Epigraphy/Numismatics (PEN) as well as an interuniversity Master’s degree program in “Comprehensive Papyrology and Digital Ancient Manuscripts.”
YOUR TASKS
The applicant will represent the fields of Greek philology and literary papyrology in their full breadth in both teaching and research. Responsibilities include training and supervising students in the degree programs offered by the Institute, as well as developing existing research projects in the field of papyrology.
YOUR PROFILE
We arelooking fora scholar with aclear profile in Greek Studies and experience in working with literary papyri. Requirements for appointment include a completed university degree in Classical Studies and an outstanding doctoral dissertation. Candidates are expected to have a proven record of acquiring and conducting externally funded research projects, as well as the commitment to actively contribute to the teaching duties of the disciplines. It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to conduct their teaching in German no later than two years after the initial appointment.

The position (of a Juniorprofessorin / Juniorprofessor) is to be filled by 01.04.2027. Formal requirements are detailed in Section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz – HG NRW).
In the third year after entering into office, an aptitude evaluation is held. This serves as the basis for the decision as to whether an extension for a further three years will be granted to the candidate. At the latest, a tenure evaluation is held in the sixth year after entering into office. On this basis, a decision will be reached as to whether the candidate will be given tenure at W3 level. Both evaluations are carried out according to the Regulations on Quality Assurance in Tenure Track Procedures and Other Evaluation Procedures for Fixed-term (Junior) Professorships at the University of Cologne. W1 professorships comprise a teaching load of four hours per week (i.e., two hours per week is one 90-minute course per semester) in the first qualification phase and five hours per week in the second qualification phase. As a rule, W3 professorships comprise a teaching load of nine semester hours per week.
