The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

Supported by 21 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

The ESRF beamline ID26 is dedicated to X‐ray absorption and emission spectroscopy. We develop advanced X‐ray spectroscopy techniques and study the electronic structure and local coordination in systems that are relevant in the applied sciences (materials science, coordination (bio)chemistry, (bio)catalysis, mineralogy and earth sciences). The beamline hosts unique instrumentation for advanced X‐ray spectroscopy and thus provides state‐of‐the‐art research possibilities. For further information about the instrument, please consult http://www.esrf.fr/id26. We collaborate with theory groups that develop codes for electronic structure calculations for X‐ray spectroscopies. You will be encouraged and supported to develop your own research, which should exploit the exceptional beamline capabilities. Your research will concern the element‐specific study of electronic structure. The exact topic of your research will be planned together with your supervisor taking into account your interests and previous experience. You will initiate and participate in collaborative research programmes with universities and research centres.

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry or a related field obtained less than three years ago.
  • Previous research related to electronic structure is essential
  • Very good skills in instrumentation (e.g. X‐rays, in‐situ cells, spectroscopy ...) are an asset.
  • Very good communication skills and willingness to work with multi‐disciplinary staff.
  • Proficiency in English ( working language at the ESRF)

Contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6 or 18-month period.
