The research will be performed primarily at KULAK (Div. of KU Leuven, Kortrijk), specialized in the use of nonlinear optical microscopy and scattering techniques for structural characterization of crystal forms ex- and in-situ. Breakthroughs in science and technology have repeatedly been driven by new and innovative materials. Where size, shape and compositional effects on the functional properties of nanomaterials have been widely explored, the influence of the crystal phase received less attention. The ability of a material to adapt multiple lattice structures, i.e. structural polymorphism, allows tuning of the functional properties (chemical, electrical, and optical) for specific applications.
The project is aimed at:
- Mapping structure-property relations of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites depending on composition, synthesis or external stimuli. The focus is gaining a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms driving polymorph selection, rather than an engineering approach. The end goal is the rational synthesis of novel materials, with a potential for applications in solar cells, LEDs or chemical sensing.
- In-situ measurements of the crystallization process of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites in order to gain insight in the kinetic parameters driving polymorph selection.

- Specialists in perovskite research, with wide experience in synthesis and characterization.
- Specialists in nonlinear optical characterization and set-up development, preferentially aimed at structural characterization through polarized measurements.
If you have other relevant experience, for instance with crystallization studies of related materials, with an emphasis on fundamental research, your application can be considered as well.
An important part of the job will consist of guiding PhD students involved in the project.
